ASDAH Stars Otara Lake Clean Up
Stars Year 9 students and their Peer Mentors from Auckland Seventh-day Adventist High School (ASDAH) took part in a clean up around Otara Lake on 5 May 2009.

The aim of the project was to clean up the rubbish that gathers in the mangroves of Otara Lake.

In attendance were 68 students, Julie Hewett, the ASDAH Stars Co-ordinator, six group leaders, the Deputy Principle of ASDAH Talonga Pita, three drivers, three volunteers from Sanitarium and the school nurse.

In addition the group was mentored and directed by Hayden Smith, the founder and boss of the Waitemata Harbour Clean Up Trust, a charitable organisation that oversees the removal of litter from Auckland's Waitemata Harbour and inner gulf islands, and promotes the concept of clean, clear rubbish-free waterways.

Julie Hewett reported “It was a great day weather-wise and everyone pitched in for a good couple of hours of hard work”.

Well done to Julie Hewett, her students and all the community volunteers involved in this environmental project.

A special thanks to Contact Energy who supplied drinks and savouries, portaloos and tanker of water and soap for washing hands at the end of the clean up.
