Turning Grey to Green
This success story shows that even in enclosed urban areas, environmental projects can provide positive outcomes for the community.
Project K Students from Napier Boys' High School designed and built a brand new garden at the Salvation Army Youth Centre in Faraday Street as part of their community project.
Students joined forces with the Salvation Army and created a green space for the centre which was in desperate need of a tidy up. The creation of the garden has made the centre look more inviting, and it is now a nicer space for Napier’s young people to meet and interact.
The gardening project involved planting native trees in soil relocated from a slip behind the centre. In addition to these natural elements, they are creating a seating and barbeque area.
The new facilities provide ongoing opportunities for youth participation as once the garden is established, it is hoped the young people using the facility will take responsibility for the upkeep of the garden.
Well done to Napier Boys High Project K students who worked alongside the Salvation Army. Thanks also to Helen Tasker at the Project K Hawke’s Bay for coordinating their efforts.
Special thanks also to Tony Maidens and Rudolph Nel of Stewart Financial Group who offered extra manpower and support. Stewart Financial Group is a long-term sponsor of Project K Hawke’s Bay and their support is much appreciated.
