Project K 2010!
So far 2010 has been a great year for Project K Auckland Central. In March, 12 students from Western Springs College 2010 group spent their Wilderness Adventure around the Lake Tarawera region. The students took part in a range of activities such as kayaking, tramping, abseiling and climbing. They loved the tramping the most and in one day tramped for 19km!! They had hot showers and fish and chips that night as a reward!! The weather was fabulous – only one day of rain! The group are currently on their Community Challenge and have completed a community work day raising money for CanTeen. They also spent a day at AUT learning about University life, managing money, writing a CV, interview skills amongst many other things.
Recently they had a great day with the mentors on their Matching Day, getting to know one another and having fun. The mentors are from a range of backgrounds, occupations and ages –but all so passionate and eager to begin their volunteering with a young person. They will be matched up this month and begin their 12 months of mentoring.
Quote from parent after matching day: “Awesome day - really great hearing the changes in the kids … I’m so excited for all of them! You do great work for all of them Rachel, great programme!”
Western Springs College 2009 PK group Graduate this month! Eleven students from the programme will be graduating. The students and mentors have worked hard over the 12 months to build strong partnerships and work on goals. For many these relationships will continue on long after PK formally ends. Graduation will take place at MERC and if weather permits students and mentors will have a couple of hours sailing! I always look forward to hearing the speeches and never fail to be blown away by the recognition of how life changing PK has often been for all involved.
The Onehunga High School 2009 PK group and One Tree Hill College 2009 PK group are at the nine and six month stage of mentoring respectively. Students and mentors have spent quality time together doing a range of things from baking cupcakes, visiting galleries, indoor climbing, catching up over hot choc, walking the dog, bowling, helping with school work.
