Project K launches in Bay of Plenty

In September 2009 FYD co-founder Graeme Dingle, and National Programme Manager Lani French traveled to Tauranga to help officially launch Project K in the region.

Since the progamme began two months prior at Otumoetai College there have been approaches from two other colleges to run Project K.

The evening was held at the Tauranga Art Gallery and the MC was was newly appointed trustee and long time supporter of our Kiwi Can programme, Dame Susan Devoy.

Also speaking at the event was past graduate from Fairfield College in Hamilton, Hamish Carter, who amazed the audience with his confidence and his stories of success through his Project K journey.

The Otumoetai students completed their wilderness adventure in July. During their Community Challenge the students have planted 200 trees in K valley, 15 large ferns at Waimarino, completed an amazing race traveling by bus to several locations and getting extra points for singing in public.

The students have also groomed and repaired the Tauranga BMX track, followed by lessons from top riders and some BMX racing themselves. They chose to support and raise funds for Child Cancer, collecting donated goods from several businesses to raffle and auctioning 2 signed sports balls on live radio, then visiting children with toys and the funds raised to help make a difference.
