We start our next programme at Flaxmere College in April and we need you as a mentor.
Are you a great listener and communicator with loads of common sense plus a sense of fun? If you are, we would love to hear from you. Being a Project K Mentor is a wonderfully rewarding and supported 12 month journey with a student as they work towards achieving their own goals.
Please contact Sharon on 06 870 4041 or email coordinator@hawkesbay.fyd.org.nz for more details.
Last year's CHB College students had their graduation ceremony on May 20th. Jorgen Murphy, Dylan Paul & Ashleigh Bennett graduated with merit and will compete for the title of Hawkes Bay Excellence award winner in November. Havelock High School 2010 Project K students are in their eight month of mentoring and will graduate on the November 4th. The students and mentors recently got together for a fun evening at ten pin bowling.
In March we selected four Hawke's Bay Project K students to go to Jump Start, where they got to do a tandem skydive out the back of a Hercules at (at 10,000ft) in Auckland. Caleb & Sara (HNHS) & Jorgen & Dylan (CHBC) came back to Hawkes Bay absolutely buzzing (see pic of Caleb above).
Currently the Central Hawkes Bay College 2011 Project K students are on their Wilderness Adventure. They have had plenty of rain, some snow, wicked frosts and lots of great experiences including abseiling and the commando drop at Te Mata Peak, kayaking in a storm at Waimarama, rafting the Mohaka in flood. They are looking forward to a warm shower & their own bed before they start their Community Challenge.
Programme Director, Nic has just completed self efficacy surveys at Flaxmere College and we are looking forward to working with the staff and students. The students will head off on Wilderness on September 26th. 2012 will be an exciting year which will see us introduce primary school programme Kiwi Can to Flaxmere Primary School. The Kiwi Can is a new programme for our Trust, and we look forward to introducing it to more schools in Flaxmere and Central Hawkes Bay as funds allow.
Central Hawke's Bay College Flaxmere College
FYD's Kiwi Can primary school programme launched in the Flaxmere region of Hawke's Bay at the start of this year.
Currently being delivered in Flaxmere School and Irongate School, the programme is reaching almost 700 children each week. In Term 1 this year the students learnt about respect, coming up in Term 2 the students will be learning about positive relationships. Our Kiwi Can Leaders are Maria Apera-Jones & Porky Maraekura.
Some feedback we have had so far:
“Thank you for teaching Room 10 about respect, manners, encouragement and participation. Thank you for bringing Kiwi Can to Irongate School. It is lots of fun. You Rock!” by Libby aged 9
“Respect is – putting rubbish in the bin, giving a snail a leaf, looking after the crickets and insects, not throwing rubbish in the sea. We have to respect our friends” Tylah aged 5
