North Shore - Project K Minimize
About us Project K Our region's sponsors

Our Project K students from Glenfield set out on their Wilderness Adventure in April, heading to the Rotorua lakes area.

The students completed an epic journey, encompassing a 24km kayaking journey, climbing Rainbow Mountain, tramping 35 kms around lakes Okataina and Tarawera. Each of the students lead a day on the expedition, they also learnt to set daily goals to help them through the journey.

Next was the Community Challenge, the second phase of the programme. Via an 'Amazing Race', the students explored the resources and support available in their community and the wider Auckland area. They were tasked with with navigating around Auckland with challenges to complete and clues to lead them to the next destination, along the way the students visited such spots as One Tree Hill, the Sky Tower and took food to the City Mission.

The students also organised their own ‘Urban Journey’ choosing locations of interest and contacting organisations to arrange a visit such as the War Memorial Museum, The Navy Museum, the RNZN Diving Section, fire station, radio station, and the SPCA. For their ‘Community Work Day’ they spent the day helping a group of intellectually and physically disabled adults in a residential home.

The third and final stage of the programme is a 12-month mentoring partnership with a screened and trained adult volunteer, from the local community. The Glenfield College group were matched with their mentors in late May and will have several facilitated and fun catch ups with their mentors before setting four key goals - school, health and fitness and two personal goals, in August. Their mentor will work with them to set and achieve these goals by the end of Project K.
